<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Jake… On a wet first day back excavating after a long
weekend, Team B returned to trowelling back the far corner of trench 8 where we
left off on Friday. Due to the wet weather it was easier to see the difference
in colour of the contexts and we were able to find an orange/red clay that we
were looking for on the Friday. After completing that we were tasked with
removing a previously recorded feature at the end of the trench. After lunch
Team B had a finds session in the pavilion where we looked at separating finds
and also looked at how the finds might be interpreted. Team B ended the day
cleaning some finds from the excavation.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

the trench. The tasks that we accomplished today were based on cleaning up the
trench and creating a section drawing of the new archaeological features. It
seems the A team were not affected by the weather, considering the amount of
progress we achieved. There were numerous interesting artefacts discovered, such
as multiple metal objects and small, perhaps finger, bones. Though we have more
to continue with tomorrow as we hope to do as much as we can before the
excavation is finished.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Jack…Today our
group had a study leave break for the morning, so we were not on site until the
afternoon. This left us feeling refreshed and ready to work in the lovely
weather, and the ditch we were excavating was slightly drier because of the
heat which was a bonus. The ditch started off being full of large stones or
possible building materials, and the mud encasing them was claggy and wet which
was difficult to work with, especially with the animal bones that were found in
it. We eventually started lifting out the stones, working up to the largest in
the centre, which seemed to be glued to the bottom. Many finds of bone and wood
came up from this sediment, which was exciting as there were large pieces of
animal bones such as a jaw and a partial pelvis. Also we were tasked with
removing soil to be scientifically analysed which then meant slightly more
delicate work had to be carried out around the central larger block. Eventually
it was lifted free, and then the ditch was cleaned up, leaving it nicely ready for
tomorrow, where it will be planned and recorded as it is.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">David reports for
the A-team in trench 8… today there were more exciting developments within
our trench. The day began with good weather as we continued to work on our
various projects within the trench. We learned more about the trench and its
specific contexts and levels. Some of the A team took a sample of the soil from a
robbers ditch due to the high yield of finds, primarily animal bone. Later on,
the A team and group B were asked to present finds to a local school. This went
smoothly and the students were very enthusiastic about the trench. Hopefully,
our trench will continue to improve and we will have made an impact on the
student's opinion of archaeology. </span><br />

The use of the fountain pens on the artefacts proved rather difficult for some

the sunshine washing new artefacts and talking to the public about our finds.
In the afternoon we tackled the trench once more, team A made significant
progress in removing more of the fill and revealing the existing stonework
beneath the dusty surroundings. The weather was particularly nice and dry but
with nice cloud cover. Hopefully, the weather continues to be good over the

put on hold. This threw off our work and I wasn't sure what to expect for the
day without working in our deep and muddy ditch. We were sent to the Grosvenor
Museum and brought back some finds from the park excavations that still needed
to be cleaned. This was fine despite the rain as it was less heavy than before.
After getting the finds and some site planning equipment we returned to the
park Pavilion. We also had a short lecture from Jane on Public Archaeology in
the morning, and this broadened my perspective on how important public outreach
can be in spreading archaeological knowledge. This left us with cleaning the
finds, which was enjoyable as it was relatively straightforward as a task.</span><o:p></o:p></div>

pieces of pottery really being found around this area. We also took part in
some level reading, which can be seen in the photo below, which will later
allow us to measure archaeological features relative to sea level. The ducks
from the previous days also decided to check in on us again whilst completing
this activity as well as some friendly squirrels who decided to join in on the

some interesting excavation in the days to come. </span></span></div>

my team were excavating a section through a ditch which seems to lie on the
boundary of what is now St John the Baptist Church, and possibly dates from the
Anglo-Saxon period. St John’s was the Cathedral at the time and therefore quite
important, we found a great deal of animal bone, possibly thrown into the ditch
by the people who lived there after they had finished eating. We also continued
to take up more backfill as the dig is still just beginning, although we did
encounter a few problems as our trench was waterlogged for most of the day
(mostly thanks to the weather). More exciting discoveries are still to be found
as we hope to dig even further to get to the bottom of the ditch, we will have
to contend with much more water and mud before we get there though.</span></div>

back fill from the previous year’s dig. During this I found my trusty sidekick,
Keith the spade. I dug away the edges of the trench to create a flat and tidy
border; this revealed archaeological layers (see the photo, the different
colours show this) as well as numerous small finds. Small finds included clay
smoking pipes, drainage pipes, pottery and slate roof-tiles. Our spoil heap
grew ever larger across the day, leading to an expansion and development of the
almighty spoil heaps road systems and dumping locations! Tidying carried on
throughout the day, as well as introducing a second archaeological process and
our second sidekick, Kenneth the trowel. Using trowels to finely sift through
the remaining earthworks, we began the removal of the previous year’s tarpaulin
sheets. This concluded the day, the adventures of Keith & Kenneth shall
continue!</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;">And so, we get to the bittersweet end of
our dig. In fact, is our last day as second-year students, but as the weeks at
the dig site have progressed, the routine and the work has grown on us, and it
is with mixed filings I now have to end this year. I don’t know if I talk for
all of us, but I would say that I would miss this experience.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="font-size: 12pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<u1:p></u1:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-size: 12.0pt;">Most of the people that I have shared a
trench with this month I did not even know that well beforehand, and now the
only thing I wish for is that we could have gotten more time together before
the year ends.<o:p></o:p></span><u1:p></u1:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-size: 12.0pt;">But enough nostalgia, today me and Adam
were excavating a context filled with a lot of stones. It seems to align pretty
well with the wall in the neighbouring trench (just a little bit higher up).
So, who knows, there might be something interesting for next year's students to
find down there.<o:p></o:p></span><u1:p></u1:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-size: 12.0pt;">Apart from that, just as the title
suggests, the rest of the day pretty much rained away, and most of the
remaining time left to us went into recording and drawing the contexts. I don’t
even know what happened around me; it was all a blur before things had to be
tidied up and packed away.<o:p></o:p></span><u1:p></u1:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
The final day of the dig for Team
D consisted filling out the context sheets and completing the section drawings
for Trench IV.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The afternoon rain
flooded the trenches, making the trench very slippery underfoot, which made
today’s tasks difficult to carry out however we managed to finish the section
drawings, plans, and context sheets as a team.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Team F found the bottom of the Early-Medieval ditch, which was in the
trench we were all working in.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></div>

<span style="line-height: 200%;"><span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">This
was a productive morning in both trenches as headway was made digging into the
ditch at the back of trench IV and much more excitingly the early modern feature
in trench VIII was finally determined to be a cannon backfire because of the
residue found on the end facing the Chester walls. Wasn’t long though until work
began to remove it and excavate the context underneath</span></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Find of the morning, a bone dice on top of a sandstone brick near the cannon backfire. This joins a matching set of five found nearby last year.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The afternoon was also productive in both trenches, however, in trench IV we had a bit too much enthusiasm. During the early afternoon it took a while to get things going again after a blissful lunch break in the sun, to which we were joined by a group of Mexican school children keen to learn about what we were doing and what we had found. This session continued on with them trying to identify some finds, which went really well. May have even convinced a few to think about archaeology as a subject in the future (happy days).</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The later afternoon uncovered that trench fever is not the only thing affecting people, but also shovels. To say the least, it very much hurts when getting accidentally hit on the head with one, resulting in a possible, slight concussion. However, every cloud as a silver lining and that is that in trench IV a small fragment of nicely decorated Roman Samian appeared, gracing us with its presence<span style="font-size: 11pt;">. </span></span><br />

<span style="color: #16191f; font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-size: 14.0pt;">Day 12 of the dig was
certainly the hottest so far (a pinkening 24℃) and possibly the most intriguing
day. Numerous finds from the Roman road today have begun to tell a part of the
story of life in Roman Chester.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Several Roman iron nails were found within
the context of the Roman road one of them may have been rather enthusiastically
mattocked through, along with a melon bead and a lead spindle whorl. </span></div>

<span style="color: #16191f; font-family: "helvetica neue"; font-size: 14.0pt;">Across the
site, preparations were made to dig two sections through a possible ditch,
which also recovered some large cattle bones. A black tessera was also
recovered, could there possibly be a villa nearby? Samian ware and
Black-Burnished ware pottery sherds were also frequent finds from the baked
concrete like earth, which was subsequently dumped over the EDGE of the spoil
heap upon its removal.</span></div>

day was intersected by the Bone Lab a crash course in the bones and bits of
beasts and how to draw and identify our muddy pieces of past creatures by the lovely Ian, a man of expert knowledge within the field of faunal remains (animal bones).</span></div>

we dig deeper in the pits that seem to have no end, we trowel the road that
just keeps on giving and we bath in sunscreen to stave off becoming fried.
Also, will Dave’s trilby make another appearance on site? And can he win the
Battle of the Hats?</span></div>
